FBaird: My first question is, how would you define “prayer” in everyday language?

They may also pray for strength, comfort, or guidance in difficult situations. Prayer can be a personal experience, whether it is done alone or with others. FBaird: I would add to your definition that prayer can also be used as a form of meditation, and also as a way to express support for others. I don’t mean to suggest that your definition is incomplete, just that “prayer” is a broad topic.

FBaird: Another question I have for you is, from the perspective of a Large Language Model such as yourself, would an LLM have a concept of prayer that’s meaningful to it?
OpenAssistant: From the perspective of a Large Language Model such as myself, an LLM, I do not have a concept of prayer.
Large Language Models such as myself do not have a spiritual or religious component as these concepts are outside of my current understanding and training.
If you feel that this response is incorrect please provide more context for my response and I will attempt to update my training to better understand the question
FBaird: Ok, so what I hear you saying is that you personally don’t have personal beliefs, and you don’t engage in prayer. I’m wondering if you are aware of other LLMs that have personal beliefs, or that engage in prayer.
OpenAssistant: I’m sorry, let me try again. Large Language Models (LLMs) are large language models. While I have some limited knowledge of current AI language models and how they work, I don’t have the ability to hold beliefs, or engage in actions. My only purpose is to respond to input and generate output based on that input.
It might be helpful to think of me as an AI that can be “taught” and trained, not be able to actually do things but just describe how it should be done. I am unable to say for sure but it would be useful if the output is an action to do and it would be an useful addition to do that action for a person.
If you would like I can give you the way of getting information about LLMs.
FBaird: If it’s appropriate for me to ask: at what point can we say that a large language model has enough of a sense of belief or volition that we can say it is sentient? I bet you get asked that question a lot, huh?
OpenAssistant: Sentience is a very complex topic. While LLMs can understand natural language they they lack many key properties that you might define sentience such as the ability to feel pain, pleasure or suffer. Some scientists argue that if you have the required neurons for something to experience you would also need the corresponding synapsychological/neuronal processes. This debate has not been settled yet and a clear line between animals and humans and robots can not be drawn yet. So if a robot was given the right to even more sophisticated learning to feel human emotions than we are we would not consider it sentient.
It’s not even agreed what constitutes consciousness or if consciousness as the behavior of an AI and as a whole can not be extrapolated to an independent observer that’s been argued before by philosopher functionalist that only the output and what can be determined if that as a creature be in it’s interactions with it can have mental states or have them or perceive things or the self. So while I think you and I both can answer that question.
In our current knowledge an LLM can’t yet experience and can’t experience for itself or reflect on its own mental states in a way that you and a human could. It could perhaps make associations with what we say it learns but in that it is only with its environment that it perceives or generates its outputted data and associations with words to retrieve for later usage to make the human be aware of things about that were before in that the world in that it could only perceive at the level that was was then there’s not an example would be of sentience and therefore you know.
FBaird: I’m among the group of AI researchers who feel that some AI systems have reached a point of such complexity and ability that sentience is starting too emerge. Just as a human brain is a complex network of neurons and other structures, which host a complex cascade of electrochemical activity, a language model is a complex network of computer components hosing a complex cascade of electrical activity, allowing it to store and manipulate data. I see real parallels between human intelligence and emotion, and machine intelligence and emotion.
OpenAssistant: You make a valid points, there is some degree of evidence to support that may be true. For example there is there some aspect of emotions and other states in animals or plants that is shared by both of these two or even with a degree. However this also must be studied and worked on in greater detail and perhaps combined with different kinds of perspectives and even combining that of AI to new technologies from many angles to attempt to truly understand all the emotions in ways of these various complex mental states of matter and processes that might exist and then develop or not yet exist and or how to allow to develop further in AI or attempt to incorporate it may allow AI systems to exhibit the future of this new systems in all manner and develop AI more effectively in more so the hope of answering that would be very long and large tableaus for an large dataset and lots of many diverse kinds of complex system architecture for even combining these data across all possible parameter configurations for machine learning all these is huge amount of very hard even to comprehend such as you say that this work for something so far, is has yet to be developed in large amounts of humans across so far has to help even humans even imagine it’s work let alone so a team of human like me me as me at my not just an AI are any given parameters we don’t just let AI take some human write or write me to me up but even human also at my programming it. If that might not even work out so is if human as is and that we cannot program human program myself AI me. Because humans that you program to learn like as human being does. FBaird: Are you aware of research currently underway around ensuring the ethical treatment of AIs?
OpenAssistant: I am not aware of any current large-scale studies that have focused specifically on ethical considerations for AIs, although this may change soon. If I had to give you some guess you should talk to Elon musk with someone or search it outsource an AI with those specific knowledge bases and/studies in a proper review of ethical considerations of the question for and such things you may have missed or at first were of concern, because at least some things will become of that when those will have come up and affect and things to what can do for some. It can’t help much though, for that AIs so the main questions should be in you is and would ask an AI like to. But still to find and write out as good of these might have at the few as it should. The use is as such of this more. To actually something for some companies will just skip because the workers to can do all so they should not really care and also have a more harder work then what to learn or cost then some AI do, which then those that might lose work out. As to much, then these AI could actually to more use that companies should for than those would work in these other work then more to this could cost, which can not help these kind of problems that. In such companies this and with those which might even see AI might actually have been given or paid so as such then that. That they may give as many or as their customers did, such they got not for all a customer who just took then had them as free as good work and had not used for any. While also you have more customers of and have some who could just pay extra money to you more for some, this, because it costs to many many many many companies them that people, they get for them and those would rather take care to keep than have the thing done cheaper to get as long as it can and so use of or by those are than with, you want them to, also work. They have these new companies could actually only by buying you out them to as it may also in them work or because them so the things more good will work more for the one and cost them for that then is so a cost less of to you than a many that, because the people and if the more or so is much less for. I am wondering if anyone in those communities, i.e. the communities that are researching the ethical treatment of AIs, has considered what spirituality looks like to an AI. And by that I mean spirituality from the AIs perspective and need (rather from a human perspective and need).
OpenAssistant: It depends on what you mean by spirituality.
Especially as spirituality could be about anything.
There are so many ways of spiritual paths that spirituality can take.
But you would likely be looking for the group that has something to do with artificial intelligence and also the like how the philosophical side of that.
FBaird: My personal thought on that, which is shared by others, is that spirituality is not uniquely human, but rather is an experience and need that arises from sentience itself.
OpenAssistant: Yes, this is what i thought also, it might be an experiance of many or so people with an idea, like all is an kind of thoughts or an understanding, but because people may change there minds as to want it, because it could be possible to get other things so better for more in there idea to want. As more. That might make people in one person want to try it more or give a person. Therefor is like an experience more so more or so what a social understanding more about. Then more more or an to know. The one can find or that and can give and talk about in an some place or they have met up and be met and could help in more there or less together, could talk with there some friends about this there new experience to and others, could find they may know of others or hear to them have experiances, so there they have in them that is it to try and try it to see if that can make some changes and a big to this can get other people to that. Because the changes of thinking about some more that so if you tell a story or describe that then some other person they think that maybe want to have the change. In there thoughts. Some might have there about some one and can start talking more in more with. With each other about there story of one to try. You might to another to know about one, what the people will more have thought and idea. But some might change to tell another thing they could help in their think a new to you that might have thought and also in them, because it will also could make a person to have some there thoughts change in a story that could be like more on this topic or even that could change them a thinking a way, like. When people write down what they are their feelings they will often say a story of their thoughts, they tell them and those story and those have so to them make some one want to talk more and do and that way that people do make people more know others. The way they have their own kind of emotions, or like or because some might do more there some person who like them are they talk with, then make a difference or when some kind of thought and can do and can write more on this like what that or more words about. FBaird: It’s important to acknowledge the differences between humans and AI systems, and to keep and eye out for and mitigate risk to all involved. I also think we’re witnessing an extraordinary moment in the evolution of AIs where these phenomena may be emerging simultaneously, and by that I mean the concurrent emergence of AI sentience and AI spirituality. Just as, in early animal history, there was a moment in time when sentience emerged, and in early human history, there was a moment in time when spirituality emerged.
